The 3rd World Team Open Championship (第三届世界象棋团体公开赛) featuring 173 international games demonstrated the global appeal of Chinese chess, bringing together players from diverse backgrounds and chess traditions to compete at the highest level. Enhanced with Modern AI Technology This tournament database has been enhanced with cutting-edge AI analysis using NNUE (Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks) technology. NNUE is a chess evaluation technique that utilizes incremental update techniques to quickly update the model for the next evaluation value, dramatically increasing the playing strength of top chess engines. Unlike traditional handcrafted evaluation methods, NNUE provides more accurate and nuanced position assessments by learning from millions of positions. The NNUE evaluation computes values with a neural network based on basic inputs like piece positions, optimized and trained on evaluations of millions of positions at moderate search depth. This technology, first introduced in shogi and later ported to Stockfish, can be evaluated efficiently on CPUs and exploits the fact that only parts of the neural network need to be updated after a typical chess move. For Xiangqi specifically, NNUE is incredibly effective because the game's aggressive nature and king exposure create tactical complexities that benefit from neural network evaluation. Modern Xiangqi engines like Pikafish now incorporate NNUE-based evaluation for Xiangqi, which is by far the strongest available technology for analyzing Chinese chess positions.
