2016 Xiangqi Tournaments Welcome to the comprehensive collection of Xiangqi tournament games from 2016, a year that showcased the extraordinary depth and global reach of Chinese chess competition. This digital archive captures the essence of a remarkable year in Xiangqi history, featuring over 5,000 tournament games from professional events across China and the international stage. The year 2016 was particularly significant for Xiangqi enthusiasts worldwide. It marked the inaugural Chu River and Han Border World King of Xiangqi Tournament, which began as a biannual event with the highest purse: One Million Chinese Yuan. This prestigious tournament represented the pinnacle of international Xiangqi competition, pitting the Chinese National Individual Champion against the World Xiangqi Federation Tournament winner from the previous year. Tournament Highlights and International Recognition Among the crown jewels of 2016 was the 19th Asian Xiangqi Championship (第19届亚洲象棋锦标赛), which featured 238 recorded games showcasing the highest level of continental competition. This tournament demonstrated that the event was not wholly dominated by China, with international participation adding richness to the competitive landscape. The tournament calendar was remarkably diverse, spanning from grassroots local competitions to international showcases. Notable events included the 2nd World Xiangqi Open (第二届世界象棋公开赛) with 188 games, the 7th Yang Guanlin Cup National Xiangqi Open ("杨官璘杯"全国象棋公开赛) featuring 270 games, and the China-South Korea Xiangqi and Shogi Masters Doubles Tournament (中韩象棋将棋大师双人赛) representing international cooperation in board game culture. Professional League Excellence The backbone of Chinese professional Xiangqi was prominently displayed through the National Xiangqi A-League (天天象棋全国象棋甲级联赛), which contributed an impressive 760 games to this collection. The tournament format that started in 2016 divided the tournament into two different phases, where participating teams battle each other in the first leg to gain enough points for the second leg, similar to basketball's post-season. This format revolutionized team competition and elevated the professional standard of the sport. The women's game was equally well-represented with the National Women's A-League (全国象棋女子甲级联赛), which resumed in 2016 after the 2014-2015 season was not held, and has since been one of the premier events for the fairer gender. This league garnered significant attention, with live televised commentaries showcasing the high level of women's competitive Xiangqi. Comprehensive Tournament Coverage This collection encompasses a remarkable variety of competitive formats and venues: Major International Events: The 19th Asian Xiangqi Championship (第19届亚洲象棋锦标赛), 2nd World Xiangqi Open (第二届世界象棋公开赛), and the inaugural AI vs Human Xiangqi Invitational (楚河汉界杯亚洲象棋人工智能对决邀请赛) featuring 11 games that highlighted the growing intersection of technology and traditional strategy. Enhanced with AI-Powered Analysis This application goes beyond simple game archiving by incorporating cutting-edge analysis powered by NNUE (Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks) technology. NNUE is a chess evaluation technique that utilizes incremental update technique to quickly update the model for the next evaluation value, providing dramatically increased evaluation accuracy compared to traditional handcrafted evaluation methods. The implementation of NNUE in Xiangqi analysis represents a significant advancement in computer-assisted game study. When experimenting with NNUE on Xiangqi, the neural network evaluation function led to a massive increase in strategic understanding and positional play, winning 65% of games against the previous handcrafted evaluation version. This technology enables users to gain deeper insights into the tournament games through more accurate position evaluation and tactical analysis. Cultural and Historical Significance The tournaments captured in this collection represent more than mere competition—they embody the rich cultural heritage of Xiangqi, a game with over 2000 years of history. From the poetic tournament names like "Chu River and Han Border" (楚河汉界), referencing the ancient conflict between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, to local celebrations such as the "Spring Welcome Cup" (迎春杯), these events connect modern players with millennia of strategic tradition. The geographic diversity of tournaments—from major cities to ancient towns like Tai'erzhuang (台儿庄古城) and regional centers across provinces—demonstrates Xiangqi's deep integration into Chinese cultural life. International participation, including Vietnamese players and cross-cultural events, highlights the game's growing global appeal.
