2023 Xiangqi Tournaments Welcome to the comprehensive collection of Xiangqi tournament records from 2023, a remarkable year that witnessed the ancient art of Chinese chess flourish across continents, cultures, and competitive levels. This application houses an extensive database of over 6,000 game records from 42 major tournaments and events, creating an invaluable resource for players, enthusiasts, and researchers seeking to understand the evolving landscape of modern Xiangqi. The year 2023 stands as a watershed moment in Xiangqi history. For the first time ever, the prestigious World Xiangqi Championship was held on American soil, with Houston, Texas hosting the 18th World Xiangqi Championship from November 19-25, 2023. This historic event drew delegations from nearly 30 countries or regions around the world with more than 120 world-class Xiangqi elites gathering to compete for the highest honors in the Xiangqi arena. Equally significant was Xiangqi's triumphant return to the Asian Games stage in Hangzhou, marking the first time the sport had been featured since the 2018 Jakarta Games. The 19th Asian Games, held from 23 September to 8 October 2023, showcased Xiangqi alongside other traditional Asian board games, reinforcing its cultural importance and competitive vitality across the continent. A Year of International Expansion and Excellence The tournaments featured in this collection span an impressive geographical range, from the China-ASEAN Xiangqi International Invitational (2023年中国-东盟象棋国际邀请赛) to the Belt and Road Initiative events, demonstrating Xiangqi's role as a cultural bridge connecting nations. The diversity is remarkable: from intimate master invitational tournaments with fewer than 30 games to massive national championships featuring hundreds of participants. Among the standout events were the National Xiangqi Youth Championship in Hangzhou (2023年韵味杭州全国象棋青年锦标赛) with 410 recorded games, and the comprehensive National Xiangqi League matches (2023年腾讯棋牌天天象棋全国象棋甲级联赛) featuring an astounding 960 games. These tournaments represent the depth and breadth of competitive Xiangqi, from grassroots development to elite professional play. Notable Tournament Highlights Several tournaments deserve special mention for their significance and contribution to Xiangqi development: The 21st Asian Xiangqi Championship (2023年诗琳通公主杯第21届亚洲象棋锦标赛) with 222 games showcased the highest level of Asian competition, while the 9th North American Xiangqi Championship (2023年云尚杯第九届北美象棋锦标赛) with 95 games highlighted the growing international presence of the sport. The Yang Guanlin Cup National Xiangqi Open (2023年第09届杨官璘杯全国象棋公开赛), honoring one of China's greatest Xiangqi legends, featured 222 games and attracted players from across the nation. This tournament exemplifies how modern competition honors the sport's rich heritage while pushing toward future excellence. Women's tournaments received significant attention in 2023, with events like the inaugural National Women's Xiangqi Masters Tournament (2023年首届全国象棋女子国手赛) and the Luoxing Cup National Women's Xiangqi Open (2023年首届罗星杯全国象棋女子公开赛), reflecting the growing emphasis on gender equality and women's participation in competitive Xiangqi. Enhanced Analysis with NNUE Technology This application is enhanced with cutting-edge AI technology, specifically NNUE (Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks), representing a significant advancement over traditional handcrafted evaluation methods. NNUE evaluation computes position values with a neural network based on basic inputs, optimized and trained on the evaluations of millions of positions at moderate search depth. This technology, originally developed for shogi and successfully adapted for Xiangqi, has proven incredibly effective in providing more nuanced and accurate positional analysis. The integration of NNUE allows for deeper insights into the games, offering analysis that mirrors human intuition while maintaining computational efficiency. Unlike traditional engines that relied on hand-crafted evaluation functions, NNUE merges brute-force calculation with the nuanced, pattern-recognizing power of artificial intelligence, making it particularly well-suited for Xiangqi's complex tactical and strategic demands. A Living Archive of Xiangqi Excellence The complete tournament roster includes diverse competitive formats and playing conditions: International Championships: The World Championship (2023年第18届世界象棋锦标赛), 32nd Southeast Asian Games (2023年第32届东南亚运动会象棋比赛), and various Belt and Road Initiative tournaments fostering international friendship through competition. National Championships: Major events including the National Team Championship (2023年全国象棋团体赛) with 688 games, National Men's League qualifying events, and rapid chess championships showcasing different time controls and competitive formats. Regional and Thematic Events: From the Qingshui County "Xuanyuan Homeland" Open (2023年清水县"轩辕故里·乐在棋中"象棋公开赛) celebrating local culture, to the innovative "Gathering at Wutong Mountain" exhibition where Wang Tianyi faced 15 opponents simultaneously (2023年"棋聚梧桐山，相约车轮战"王天一1对15车轮表演赛). Cultural Significance and Future Impact Beyond mere competition records, these tournaments represent the living heritage of a game that has captivated minds for over two millennia. Each game tells a story of strategic innovation, cultural exchange, and human determination. The presence of international players in traditionally Chinese-dominated events, such as non-Asian players like Olivier Tessier competing in the World Championship, demonstrates Xiangqi's expanding global appeal. The 2023 tournament season also highlighted the increasing professionalization of Xiangqi, with standardized time controls, sophisticated broadcasting, and comprehensive record-keeping that preserves these contests for future study and enjoyment. The organizing committee live-broadcasted opening and closing ceremonies and the whole process of competitions through major online media platforms, bringing Xiangqi to audiences worldwide. As you explore these tournament records, you're not just accessing game scores—you're connecting with a continuous tradition of strategic excellence that bridges ancient wisdom and modern competitive spirit. Whether you're a serious competitor studying opening innovations, a casual player seeking entertainment, or a researcher investigating the evolution of Xiangqi theory, these records offer invaluable insights into the state of the royal game in 2023. The year 2023 will be remembered as a pivotal moment when Xiangqi truly embraced its global destiny while honoring its profound cultural roots, setting the stage for even greater international recognition and appreciation in the years to come.
